Martin Pakledinaz, pictured, left, a noted costume designer who won a Tony Award for « Kiss Me Kate » and « Thoroughly Modern Millie, » died on July 8 after a long battle with cancer. He was 58. His work, which can be seen on Broadway in « Nice Work If You Can Get It, » was consistently beautiful and witty. My favorite moment in « Nice Work » — a fantasy number swirling around a bathtub — was all the more so thanks to his pretty-in-pink creations.
Bernard Gersten will step down as executive producer of Lincoln Center Theatre on June 30, 2013, after 28 years. There will be no successor, it was also announced. « We’ve had a terrific run, » said Gersten. Seriously — Over the last 27 years he and his cohorts have over seen 147 productions.
Judith Ivey, who won a Tony for « Steaming » and « Hurlyburly, » has joined the fall Broadway revival of « The Heiress » starring the previously announced Jessica Chastain (« The Help »), Dan Stevens (« Downton Abbey ») and David Strathairn. Previews of the play start Oct. 7 at the Walter Kerr. Ivey, whose recent stage roles have included Amanda in « The Glass Menagerie » and Mommy in « The American Dream » (her performance still makes me smile four years later), will play Aunt Penniman in the revival.
