New York hopes to return to win column against Fire

Red Bull New York will try to snap a three- game winless streak on Wednesday when the club welcomes the Chicago Fire to Red Bull Arena.

The two sides are separated by just one point in the Eastern Conference, but at the moment, they are headed in opposite directions.

Chicago has won four of its last six games and has already matched its win total from last season with nine victories thus far.

But head coach Frank Klopas is not satisfied with just matching last season’s win total, and he feels his side has plenty more left to accomplish.

« I think it is important that we have had a good start to the season, » Klopas said. « We have a long way to go and we have to keep going. It’s one win. You enjoy this one but we have to look and see how we can get better as a team. Everyone knows what the goal is and that’s what we’re shooting for. We’re not happy with nine wins. It’s about game after game after game. You can’t get too high or too low after games. We have a difficult match in New York and then we have to keep going. We have to reach our goal in the end. »

New York’s 2-2 draw with Seattle Sounders FC over the weekend has left the club with two points from its last three games and dropped the team four points back of Eastern Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City.

Despite getting just a point from the game, there were positives, including the debut of forward Sebastien Le Toux, who netted a goal 24 minutes into his first New York match.

Le Toux was acquired from Vancouver last week and forms a potent attacking trio along with Thierry Henry and Kenny Cooper.

And although it was evident at times that the three were playing together for the first time, there were still flashes of what these three talented attackers are capable of.

Goalkeeper Bill Gaudette was also playing in his first match for New York after joining the team from Los Angeles. He came up with a pair of big saves in the first half and acknowledged that it will take a little time to get settled.

« It’s tough when you come into a new environment, there’s no way around it, » Gaudette said. « It wasn’t the easiest situation to come in and kind of just jump in there. The guys really don’t know me, don’t know my style, don’t know much about anything [about me]. It was a little interesting. »

The result wasn’t bad for New York considering a few new additions were made days before the game, but Hans Backe will hope his side can return to the win column against a Chicago team that will be trying to move into second place with a win.

The Fire secured a 1-0 victory over Vancouver on Saturday in a game that saw the team play the final 20 minutes with 10 men, but still manage to hold out for the win.

« It’s a plus to get shutouts, but the first thing is getting three points… being able to do both, given the fact we had 10 men, shows that we have character as a team, and we were able to fight, » said goalkeeper Sean Johnson, who has kept clean sheets in three of his last four games. « Those 10 guys in front of me battled for 90 minutes and we were able to come away with the result. »

Last season, Chicago wouldn’t have been able to find a way to hold on for three points. But this is clearly a Fire team that expects more this year.

New York tech companies getting big lift from venture capital boom

Google’s New York headquarters at 111 Eighth Avenue. As New York’s tech clout has grown, venture capital dollars are pouring in.

JUSTIN LANE/EPA

Google’s New York headquarters at 111 Eighth Ave. As New York’s tech clout has grown, venture capital dollars are pouring in.

New York is raking in the deal dollars.

For the second quarter in a row, New York state surpassed Massachusetts as the country’s No. 2 destination for venture capital deals, though it still ranks behind venture capital king California, according to a new report from CB Insights.

New York state and New York City – where most of the state’s venture deals are concentrated – had long ago surpassed Massachusetts in the number of tech deals.

Now it is overshooting its neighbor in venture deals overall. New York scored 83 in the quarter vs. 75 for Massachusetts.

The top five New York-based companies that nabbed funding were all tech companies. The big winner was 10gen, a data base company, which nailed $42 million, followed by ecommerce firms Etsy and Moda Operandi.

« New York is well-positioned in this boom, » CB Insights CEO Anand Sanwal told the Daily News. « The areas where tech is growing play to New York’s strength in advertising and fashion. »

Nationally, after a slow winter, venture deals heated up again in the second quarter.

Marking the biggest quarter since the dotcom era, a total of 812 companies received $8.1 billion in financing.

That was a 37% jump in funding and a 3% increase in deals vs. the prior quarter. On a year over year basis, funding and deals were up 5% and 4% respectively.

There was a big uptick in investing in mobile technology as venture capitalists tried to scout out the the next big Instagram, the mobile photo-sharing site that was sold to Facebook for $1 billion.

The mobile sector witnessed 102 deals, an all-time high. Photo and video related companies took home almost 30% of the funding in mobile.

« People are going back to the same well, » Sanwal said.

NY among states probing interest-rate fixing

NEW YORK – Attorneys general in at least five states, including New York, are conducting investigations tied to alleged manipulation of the London interbank offered rate, adding to probes by U.S. and British authorities.

The probes by New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida and Maryland are in different stages, according to the states. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and George Jepsen in Connecticut are working together, and Massachusetts is talking with other states about possible coordination.

« The New York and Connecticut attorneys general have been looking into these issues for over six months, and will continue to follow the facts wherever they lead, » James Freedland, a spokesman for Schneiderman, said July 15 in an email.

VIDEO: Barclays investigation puts scrutiny on banks
MORE: Bernanke: Fed had no power to change LIBOR | Editorial: Financial crisis is one of faith | Former Barclays exec admits false LIBOR submission

Barclays, Britain‘s second-biggest bank by assets, last month was fined $453 million for submitting false rates for Libor, a benchmark interest rate for financial products valued at $360 trillion. Royal Bank of Scotland Group, UBS Lloyds Banking Group and Deutsche Bank are among lenders facing inquiries over alleged rigging of Libor.

Barclays traders who allegedly manipulated rates from 2005 to 2007 may be charged by U.S. prosecutors before Labor Day, Sept. 3, according to a person familiar with the Justice Department‘s investigation. The scandal led to the resignation of Robert Diamond as the bank’s chief executive officer.

New York and Connecticut are investigating whether the states incurred losses as the result of manipulation, according to Schneiderman’s office. Jaclyn Falkowski, a spokeswoman for Jepsen, said the states are investigating « with the goal of providing restitution to state agencies, municipalities, school districts and not-for-profit entities nationwide that may have been harmed by any illegal conduct. »

Massachusetts is looking into the effect on state investments and is working with state agencies and municipalities, said Brad Puffer, a spokesman for Attorney ! General Martha Coakley. Massachusetts is talking with other states about the possibility of working together. Puffer declined to name the states.

« We are currently investigating the serious allegations around the manipulation of the Libor and working diligently to determine what, if any, impact it may have on Massachusetts investments, » he said in an e-mailed statement.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office is « reviewing the matter, » spokeswoman Jenn Meale said. The inquiry isn’t a formal investigation, she said. Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler is « looking into » the allegations, spokesman David Paulson said. Meale and Paulson declined to comment further.

Declines in interest rates have left state and municipal governments that sold debt with variable rates mired in swaps they can’t afford to unwind because of high penalty rates.

The penalties are tied to Libor and other indexes that have fallen to near historic lows since the financial crisis that began in 2007, forcing at least $4 billion of payments to end the agreements, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Other borrowers stayed in swaps because they haven’t been willing or able to pay the cost of unwinding them. The city of Baltimore and the New Britain Firefighters’ and Police Benefit Fund in Connecticut consolidated and amended a complaint against Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Bank of America and other banks alleging they artificially suppressed Libor, according to documents in Manhattan federal court.

Interest-rate swaps, designed to cut and fix the cost of variable-rate debt, are agreements between borrowers and banks in which they exchange interest payments, with the cost tied to indexes such as swaps. Some interest-rate swaps backfired when yields fell precipitously.

The California Public Employees Retirement System, the largest U.S public pension with $233 billion of assets, is examining the impact of Libor fixing on its portfolio and will make a judgment about whether to seek damages, said Ch! ief Investment Officer Joe Dear.

« If we were harmed by specific actions by specific banks, we will seek remedial correction, » Dear said. « My hope is that the authorities will review the situation and prosecute where possible those who have done the system harm. It is difficult to underestimate the magnitude of the Libor rate fixing as an episode that fundamentally undermines investors’ confidence in our capital markets. »

Shum Preston, a spokesman for California Attorney General Kamala Harris, declined to comment about whether the office is investigating.

New Yahoo CEO is Google’s Marissa Mayer – and she’s pregnant

Google vice president of search Marissa Mayer announces Google's new music service feature called OneBox, at Capitol Records headquarters in Los Angeles on October 28, 2009. Google said OneBox, a product of their newly announced alliance with Lala.com and MySpace-owned iLike, will stream line the process of searching for, listening to and buying music on the Web. Google vice president Marissa Mayer has been named the new CEO of Yahoo.

Marissa Mayer has a lot to celebrate these days. Not only did the 37-year-old Google vice president start a high-profile new role as the CEO of Yahoo on Tuesday, she also announced Monday she is six months pregnant with her first child.

The announcement that Mayer, one of the most highly visible women working in tech, would be taking over as President and CEO of the struggling Internet giant came as a shock to many. Now a celebrity in the tech community, Mayer joined Google in 1999 as its 20th employee and first female engineer and became one of the search giant’s most famous faces.

News of her pregnancy also came as a surprise, as just hours after her move to Yahoo became public Mayer revealed she is due to give birth to a baby boy on Oct. 7. She praised the Yahoo board for not blinking an eye at hiring a pregnant woman to run the company.

« They showed their evolved thinking, » Mayer told Fortune.

The expectant mom said she began talks with Yahoo last month, when a high-level recruiter called her on June 18. Now that she has started the job she doesn’t plan to let her pregnancy interfere with her work schedule.

« I like to stay in the rhythm of things, » she told the magazine. « My maternity leave will be a few weeks long and I’ll work throughout it. »

The Stanford grad – who once dated Google co-founder Larry Page – is now married to Zachary Bogue, a trained lawyer who co-founded a private equity firm and works with startups. So far, their baby boy is fitting into the family mold.

« He’s super active, » she told Fortune. « He moves around a lot. My doctor says that he takes after his parents. »

Mayer wasted no time getting to work at Yahoo, announcing in a press release that « There is a lot to do and I can’t wait to get started.”

All eyes will be on the blond beauty as she tries to turn around the fortunes of the flailing company, which has churned through three CEOs in the last year.

In May, Scott Thompson was forced to resign as CEO after less than six months on the job when it was revealed he had faked parts of his resume. Thompson had replaced Carol Bartz, who was fired in September after failing to fix the company. Mayer replaces interim CEO Ross Levinsohn, who was expected by many to take over the role permanently. Mayer would not comment on that except to praise Levinsohn to Fortune as « a phenomenal executive.”

Mayer had an impressive impact during her 13-year track record at Google, leading a number of the company’s businesses over the years from Google News to Gmail to Image Search, as well as curating the Google Doodle. Most recently she served as a vice president working on location services and maps, though it was reported that she had been pushed out of Page’s inner circle after he was appointed CEO last year, and she wasd denied a promotion.

A Google source shot down that interpretation of events last month, telling Business Insider that Mayer ran “something like 20-25% of the company overall.”

As one of a handful of women at the top of the tech food chain, Mayer has also proved controversial – mocked for her glamorous lifestyle and her interests in fashion, baking and shopping. Described in a 2008 magazine profile as « Grace Kelly gorgeous, » she’s been called a “social climber” and “Google’s biggest failure.”

But the Stanford grad, who earlier this years was named the first woman to Wal-Mart’s board of directors, has brushed off that kind of criticism.

« I refuse to be stereotyped, » she told The New York Times in 2009. « I think it’s very comforting for people to put me in a box. ‘Oh, she’s a fluffy girlie girl who likes clothes and cupcakes. Oh, but wait, she is spending her weekends doing hardware electronics.' »

Though her departure from Google came as a shock to the industry, it’s clear Mayer had been eyeing her next move for years, even publicly speculating about it as far back as 2008.

“I helped build Google, » she told San Francisco magazine at the time, » but I don’t like to rest on (my) laurels. I think the most interesting thing is what happens next. »

Toronto Blue Jays (45-45) at New York Yankees (55-34), 7:05 pm (ET)

After tossing a simulated game at Yankee Stadium last Friday, it appears CC Sabathia is ready to get back to work.

Sabathia is slated to take the mound tonight in the second installment of a three-game series versus the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium and hasn’t pitched since a June 24 win against the New York Mets at Citi Field. He suffered a left groin strain that day and has been on the disabled list since.

The left-hander, who also threw a bullpen session at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday during All-Star festivities, is 9-3 with a 3.45 earned run average in 15 starts and could be on a pitch count against Toronto.

Sabathia has won four of his last five decisions and is 4-2 in six starts at home this season. He has yet to face the Blue Jays in 2012, but is 12-3 with a 3.16 ERA in 16 career starts against them. What’s even more impressive is his 7-0 record and 2.73 ERA in the past eight starts in this series.

A 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner, Sabathia will avoid facing Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista tonight. Bautista left Monday’s 6-3 loss to the Yankees in the eighth inning with a left wrist injury suffered during an at-bat and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday afternoon. Bautista was in obvious pain and X-rays taken were negative. Last night he used Twitter after the game to update his status.

« Thanks everyone for your concerns. XRAY negative and further testing tomorrow. #fingerscrossed and wish me luck! »

Bautista is tied for second in the majors with 27 homers — one behind Adam Dunn of the Chicago White Sox. He is only 1-for-19 (.053) with four walks and eight strikeouts in his career against Sabathia.

The Yankees took the lead for good last night when Raul Ibanez clubbed a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning. Russell Martin also homered and Robinson Cano extended his hitting streak to a career-best 19 games with a 2- for-3 effort at the plate, an RBI and a run scored. New York won for the seventh time in nine tries and extended its lead atop the AL East to nine games ahead of Baltimore.

« We’ve always liked him as a hitter, » Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Ibanez. « He’s come up with some huge hits for us. »

Cano has 12 runs, six homers, 20 RBI and 11 multi-hit games during the surge. New York leads the majors with 144 homers and has scored at least three runs in 40 straight games to set a franchise single-season record. The team record is 49 games from Sept. 7, 1950 through May 16, 1951. Cleveland did it in 48 games back in 1994.

The Yankees have homered 43 times in the past 22 contests and are 37-2 when holding opponents to three runs or less.

Phil Hughes started for the Yanks on Monday and did not record a decision with seven innings of two-run ball. Reliever David Robertson tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the win and Rafael Soriano was called on to get the final two outs in the ninth for his 23rd save.

Adam Lind hit a home run for a Blue Jays club that is second behind New York in homers with 131. Edwin Encarnacion finished with two hits and an RBI in a losing cause. Toronto had won two straight and three of four games, and will visit Boston for a three-game series after this series in the Bronx.

Henderson Alvarez allowed two runs in six innings in the no-decision, while Aaron Loup gave up Ibanez’s blast to absorb the loss. Toronto is last in the AL East at 10 1/2 games off the pace, but sits two games off the Wild Card.

Brett Cecil has the luxury of countering Sabathia on the mound for the Jays tonight and will make his sixth start of the season. Promoted from Double-A in June, Cecil was roughed up his last time out in an 11-9 road win against the Chicago White Sox on July 8.

He gave up seven runs — six earned — and six hits in 4 1/3 innings for the no-decision. Cecil is 2-1 with a 6.75 earned run average in five starts in the big leagues this season. The left-hander has made nine career starts against the Yankees, going 4-3 with a 4.96 ERA.

Toronto won two meetings with New York back in May and still has prevailed in four of the past six matchups between the teams. The Yankees, though, have won the last six encounters at home.

On this day 71 years ago, Yankees Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio had his incredible 56-game hitting streak come to an end. He then had a 16-game hit streak after the amazing tear came to a close.

New York Retailers Offer ‘Lin-Sane’ Discounts on Jeremy Lin Merchandise: Fan’s …

‘Lin-sane’ discounts on New York Knicks Jeremy Lin gear didn’t exactly entice shoppers in the Big Apple to flock to local malls and sporting goods stores this week.

At midday on July 17, Champs Sports at Broadway Mall in Hicksville, NY, was a ghost town despite ridiculous prices on Lin t-shirts and jerseys.

Lin T-Shirts Marked Close To 50% Off

The Lin adidas player name and number Knicks No. 17 t-shirts, which Champs had marked down to $12.99 from their original $22 price, were fully stocked on the shelves, and it looked as if they hadn’t been touched in days.

Customers in the store were spotted eyeing LeBron James Miami Heat jerseys and Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls merchandise, but not many expressed interest in Jeremy Lin merchandise.

« Lin is still very popular here in New York, but teenagers are fickle, » said Tara Painter, 23, of Hicksville, NY. « The people who wear NBA t-shirts and jerseys want to look cool for their friends. Regardless of the steep discount, wearing a jersey of a player who isn’t on the team anymore isn’t a good look. »

Painter, who was shopping at Champs Sports for NBA merchandise for her younger cousin who will be returning to school in September, opted instead for a regularly priced Carmelo Anthony shirt.

« At least [Anthony] will definitely be on the Knicks next year, » she laughed after plunking down $22, leaving the discounted Lin shirts to collect dust on the clearance rack next to New York Mets Jose Reyes jerseys and New York Jets Plaxico Burress t-shirts.

Macy’s, also in Broadway Mall, had various Jeremy Lin t-shirts, priced $25 in Feb., marked down to $12.50.

And Lin’s book, « There’s No Expiration Date On Dreams, » authored by Rich Wolfe, was marked down to $4.99 by July 16, just three months after it hit the shelves at $24.95.

Wait And See Approach

New York sports fans seem to be taking a wait and see approach on Lin gear, as the Knicks have until 11:59 on July 17 to match the Houston Rockets’ three-year, $25.1 million dollar that was offered to the Taiwanese sensation.

If the Knicks let Lin slip away to the Rockets, No. 17 New York basketball jerseys and t-shirts will likely fall in price even more by July 18.

« We’re going to have crazy, crazy prices — like $5, » Mitchell Modell said in a businessweek.com report. Modell, the namesake of the sports retailer Modell’s Sporting Goods, was referring to Lin merchandise if the Knicks fail to match the Rockets offer.

Will Knicks Lin Jerseys Be Rendered Worthless?

« If Lin leaves, this product is going to be worth virtually nothing, » said Matt Powell, an analyst with Charlotte, North Carolina-based SportsOneSource, an analysis firm focused on the sporting-goods industry.

Assuming the Knicks fail to match Houston’s offer to Lin, expect the malls to be packed on Wednesday morning as fans look to take advantage of the clearance prices.

The Knicks reached agreement on July 14 on a sign-and-trade deal with the Portland Trail Blazers to acquire point guard Raymond Felton, and they have two other point guards under contract – veteran Jason Kidd and Argentine guard Pablo Prigioni. Having three point guards under contract essentially leaves Lin out in the cold.

Only in the Big Apple can you go from superstar to the clearance racks in just five months.

Preview of the Chicago Fire Vs. New York Red Bulls Game on July 18: MLS Fan …

The Chicago Fire will face the New York Red Bulls on July 18 at Red Bull Arena. The Fire won their last game against the Red Bulls with 3-1 on June 17. Chicago will be forced to play without Arne Friedrich, and it could have an impact on the match.

Match Details

There has been some confusion among fans about the start time of the July 18 game. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EST and will be available on the Comcast SportsNet. It is not clear why MLS has decided to use an early start time, but the Red Bulls are rumored to have requested this.

No Arne Friedrich

The Chicago Fire will not be able to use Arne Friedrich on July 18, but it is important to note that he was also not part of the lineup during their last match against the New York Red Bulls on June 17. Friedrich will be serving a one game suspension for obtaining a red card during the July 14 game. Unfortunately, his absence may be felt more on July 18 because Sebastian Grazzini will not be playing.

Current Standings

The Chicago Fire are currently ranked in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points. The New York Red Bulls are only one point ahead with 32 and ranked in third place. The Fire and the Red Bulls have the same total number of wins this season with 9. However, away games tend to be more difficult for Chicago, and their last win against New York was at home.

Who will Frank Klopas use?

Head coach Frank Klopas is waiting to release his starting lineup for the July 18 game, but speculation started on July 14. Klopas will probably rely on Alex and Rolfe again because he used both of them at the last match with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Since Arne Friedrich is unavailable, fans may see Austin Berry play. The Chicago Fire claim that Marco Pappa has recovered from the infection that forced him to miss the game on July 14, so he will be a possible option for the lineup.

New York Jets’ Santonio Holmes: Two-QB system won’t work

NEW YORK — One team, two quarterbacks. Santonio Holmes believes that’s a no-go.

The New York Jets wide receiver told NFL Network on Monday night that he doubts an NFL team can succeed by using a two-quarterback system, despite the fact Gang Green plans to use both starter Mark Sanchez and backup Tim Tebow during games this season.

« No, I don’t think so, » Holmes said. « You have to allow one quarterback to get into the rhythm of the game. It starts from the preparation in practice, knowing the first couple of plays that he’s going to take these reps. It’s getting a feel for coming onto the field with the crowd awaiting you. It’s the making the mistakes early in the game to finishing the games at the end. You don’t just change a guy out just because he has a few mistakes early in a game. »

Muscling up

Mark Sanchez is impressed by Tim Tebow — well at least his muscles. The starting QB called his backup the « The Incredible Hulk. » More …

« I think coming into this season that we have a lot to expect from Sanchez. »

The Jets have insisted that Sanchez is the undisputed starter and will take the bulk of the snaps, but Tebow will be heavily involved in the offense. While it might not necessarily be a two-quarterback attack, Jets coach Rex Ryan has speculated that Tebow could be in for as many as 20 snaps, depending on the game plan. That means Sanchez could come off the field for some of those plays.

Regardless, Holmes believes Tebow’s role will be defined and not disrupt the rhythm of Sanchez or the rest of new coordinator Tony Sparano’s offense.

« Tebow’s going to have plays where he comes in and plays, » Holmes said. « Whether he plays at quarterback, Sanchez is on the field or off the field, those are the plays that Coach has designed for Tebow to run that week. I’m pretty sure he’s going to get them done and he’s going to do his job just as well as any other quarterback would when they get an opportunity to get on the field. »

Holmes participated in Sanchez’s « Jets West » camp in Southern California last week and said it was a « wonderful » opportunity for the offensive players to bond.

« Tebow looked pretty good, he was on target, » Holmes said. « Sanchez has done everything that he can do to keep his starting spot. I’m thinking that he’s going to be our guy this season. I’m not saying that with any bit of less confidence than the way I feel about him coming into this season. He’s going to be our guy that we depended on for the past couple of years, and he’s going to get the job done this year. »

Holmes and Sanchez were in the middle of locker-room tension that helped derail the Jets’ 2011 season — capped by Holmes being benched in the season finale at Miami after arguing in the huddle.

Former Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson recently said on « The Rich Eisen Podcast » that Holmes could be a problem again if he’s not getting his catches, but he hopes the receiver learned from what went on last season.

« When you have a playmaker on the field that wants to help his team as much as myself and L.T. does, you have to find a way to get them the ball, » Holmes said. « You have to find a way to allow these guys to be great teammates and by fulfilling those needs is one way of allowing a guy to be a great teammate. »

Gotham is as Gotham does, and no one knows better just how dramatic it can be than the cast of « The Dark Knight Rises, » the third and much-anticipated film of the Batman trilogy by Christopher Nolan. Actors Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway and others dazzled on the red carpet in New York Monday night at AMC Lincoln Square Theater for the world premiere of the movie, which swoops into theaters Friday, July 20.

« Yeah, it’s bittersweet, but I think though that Chris is such a good storyteller, if he says it’s the right time to finish, it’s the right time to finish, » Batman’s Bale told E! News at the premiere. « It’s nice to leave when we’re out on top instead of leaving people wanting less. »

New York Man Catches Girl Falling From Window

Jul 17, 2012 8:18am

A 7-year-old New York City girl escaped injury after she fell from a third-story window when she was caught by a neighbor.

Cell phone video taken by a resident in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn shows Keyla McCree standing on an air conditioning unit moments before she fell and landed in the bushes. Her dramatic fall was broken by the arms of Steven St. Bernard, who rushed to the scene and caught the girl.

“Please let me catch her, please let me catch her, that’s all I could say. Let me catch the little baby, that’s all,” said St. Bernard.

The 52-year-old bus driver and father of four told ABC News affiliate WABC that he was just in the right place at the right time.

“It feels good now to know that I did something,” said St. Bernard, who lives in the apartment complex.

Keyla, who is autistic, managed to perch herself on the air conditioner by pushing through one of the accordion pieces that holds the unit to the window while her mother was in the next room. Moments before she fell, McCree was seen dancing on the air conditioning unit. Police tell WABC they do not believe McCree’s parents  did anything criminal.

“She did hit the bushes and the ground a little, but not straight on because of his arms,” said witness Latasha Marcus.

St. Bernard tore a tendon in his left shoulder and was sporting a sling after the incident. As for Keyla, she’s doing just fine thanks to the man who certainly lived up to his name.

“I saw her in the hospital. She doesn’t have a scratch on her,” said St. Bernard.

This morning, friends and neighbors are calling St. Bernard a hero. “No. A hero is a sandwich. I just saw a kid, that’s it,” said St. Bernard.
